The UN Climate Change Local Conference of Youth (LCOY)

The UN Climate Change Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) is an event under the banner of YOUNGO – The Official Children and Youth Constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This conference precedes and contributes to the annual UN Climate Change Conference, also known as the Conference of the Parties (COP), which will be held between 10-21 November 2025 in Belém, Brazil. LCOY serves as a space for capacity building to young people for their participation at COP.

On the other hand, LCOY will highlight the outcomes of the Egypt National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS) 2050

On the other hand, LCOY will highlight the outcomes of the Egypt National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS) 2050 which outlines a comprehensive roadmap for addressing climate change challenges and achieving sustainable development goals in Egypt over the next three decades. This ambitious strategy aims to enhance resilience, reduce vulnerability, and promote low-carbon development across various sectors of the economy. Through a combination of policy interventions, capacity-building initiatives, and stakeholder engagement, the NCCS 2050 seeks to mainstream climate considerations into national planning processes and foster a transition to a climate-resilient and low-emission society. Key pillars of the strategy include mitigation and adaptation measures, renewable energy deployment, sustainable agriculture and water management practices, as well as climate finance and technology transfer mechanisms. The NCCS 2050 reflects Egypt's commitment to fulfilling its international obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and aligning with global efforts to address the impacts of climate change. By prioritizing climate action and integrating it into national development plans, the NCCS 2050 aims to safeguard Egypt's environment, economy, and social well-being for current and future generations.

LCOY aims to provide a nexus for sustained ideation, dialogue, and action on climate change and the SDGs, with the following goals and deliverables:

Build the capacity of agricultural and coastal communities in the Delta, Upper Egypt, and Border governorates to adapt to climate impacts through interactive workshops.

Increase public awareness, education, and local stakeholder engagement on climate change and environmental sustainability through social media and the conference activities.

Accelerate the transition to sustainable and resilient urban and rural infrastructures in Great Cairo and across Egypt, focusing on renewable energy adoption, water resource management.

Provide a foundation for peer-to-peer networking and exchange among Egyptian youth organizations to coordinate shared dialogue, goals and visions.

Establish a centralized hub for youth decision-making and action regarding climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals in Egypt.

Facilitate a nexus for cross-sectoral dialogues, transformative partnerships, and collaboration.

Collection of youth and community public opinion on key issues related to the climate crisis and sustainable development in Egypt.

Showcase best practices, guidelines, and principles in the public, private, and civil sectors to better inform youth changemakers and communities on the SDGs and climate.

Climate Facts About Egypt:

1. Vulnerability:

Egypt is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to its arid climate, dependence on the Nile River for freshwater, and densely populated coastal areas.

2. Rising Temperatures:

Egypt has been experiencing a steady increase in temperatures over the past century, with projections indicating further warming in the future. High temperatures exacerbate heatwaves, droughts, and water scarcity, impacting agriculture, public health, and infrastructure.

3. Changing Precipitation Patterns:

Climate change is altering rainfall patterns in Egypt, leading to more frequent and intense droughts in some regions and erratic rainfall in others. This variability affects agricultural productivity, water availability, and food security.

4. Sea Level Rise:

Egypt's coastal areas, including the Nile Delta and the Mediterranean coast, are at risk from sea level rise due to climate change. Rising sea levels threaten coastal communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems, exacerbating erosion, flooding, and saltwater intrusion.

5. Water Scarcity:

Climate change exacerbates water scarcity in Egypt, a country already facing significant water stress. Changes in precipitation patterns, increased evaporation rates, and rising temperatures reduce water availability for agriculture, industry, and domestic use, posing challenges for sustainable water management.

6. Agriculture Impacts:

Climate change affects Egypt's agricultural sector, which is vital for food security and rural livelihoods. Changes in temperature and rainfall patterns, coupled with increased frequency of extreme weather events, disrupt crop yields, livestock production, and agricultural practices.

7. Health Risks:

Climate change poses health risks to Egypt's population, including heat-related illnesses, waterborne diseases, and vector-borne diseases. High temperatures, poor air quality, and water contamination exacerbate health problems, particularly in urban areas with limited access to healthcare services.

8. Renewable Energy Potential:

Egypt has significant renewable energy potential, including solar and wind resources, which can help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The country has made strides in renewable energy development, with ambitious targets for expanding clean energy capacity.
